I’m a sucker for finishing off stuff. Hate, hate hate, little things that don’t get done for one reason or another. The last week of my vacation I went around the top floor of the house with a caulk gun and wood colored filler. I filled all the little left over gaps from when the new floor was laid two and a half years ago.   The old floor, or rather two layers of old floor + subfloor, was higher than the new floor and while my contractors added slightly higher skirting boards there were these gaps from where the vertical trim meets the floor. I didn’t give them enough time to do the finishing touches and instead planned to do it myself. It’s bothered me every time I’ve been up there and I finally did something about it. And it feels SO good. Still to do is give the not-entirely-white skirting boards and that threshold a lick of white paint. Maybe this Christmas.   I also got the same little ok rosettes to cover the pipe holes like I did in Wille’s bedroom. They really do finish things off nicely. These I haven’t glued together yet as I need to paint the skirting boards behind so there’s a tiny gap so I can open them up and remove them when I’m ready to paint. After that’s done I’ll use wood glue to shut them up. Like I said, I just love finishing things off.

The Finished Stairs

Tags: , , , ,

So my stairs are finally done. It’s been quite a saga which you can read all about here, here, here and here.   Again it was quite a big and messy job tearing and prying off the old step kit and then filling all the dents and dings, sanding everything down to get a smooth finish and caulking all the gaps.   I was under a little bit of stress during this project because I wanted everything done while Wille was away for a few days and finished by the time he got home since he’s the one that actually uses the upstairs and needs access via the stairs to his room and the bathroom. Stressing is not a good thing. 1. I spilled half a can of paint onto the stairs. Luckily I could just sweep the paint further down so it got used up that way. 2. As I was sweeping halfway down I heard Mini’s bell UPSTAIRS! I thought she was outside! Picture me on the tips of my toes catching Mini on the landing JUST before she was about to come down. Phew!     Anyway, here’s the finished product. SO happy I can finally tick this project off.   And here’s a before for good measure. You can check out a post about the stained handrails here and if you haven’t had enough of stairs there are also posts on the basement stairs here, here and here and on the entry hall stairs here and here.

Basket on Castors

Tags: , , , , ,

I’ve had this basket on the floor in my downstairs wardrobe but the fact that it was kind of scratching the painted floor when filled up and pulled out kind of bothered me.   So again I added castors. I love castors. They keep stuff off the immediate floor and make stuff easy to more around. I’ve used them A LOT in the past. Like here, here, here, here and here but also on Wille’s current armchair and on the coffee table in the den.   So simple. I just drilled holes in the four corners using a drill bit matching the bolts on the castors…   … and screwed the casteors on with nuts on the inside.   Off the floor!   And what’s the basket for? I keep the clothes that are going to be donated to charity in there. It’s really convenient since I get dressed in there, if something doesn’t take my fancy anymore I can put it directly in the basket and wait for the curb side pick up flyer. When I get a flyer saying there’ll be a pick up it’s all ready to go.
